Edward Hopper (1882–1967) was an American painter who lived in New York. Nighthawks has often been described as conveying loneliness and desolation through its emptiness and isolated, anonymous actors. Hopper denied any conscious intention: ‘I didn’t see it as particularly lonely … Unconsciously, probably, I was painting the loneliness of a large city.’
