  • The Return of the King

Cinema foyer lighting, when coupled with lifesize cutouts and tacky, super-sized posters makes for quite an unusual scene. I took this photograph while queuing for The Return of the King, which — although quite a wait — didn’t last for nearly as long as the feature presentation. According to MovieWeb, the film has grossed nearly… Read more →

  • “This Means Waugh!”

The fourth test match between India and Australia seems to be going India’s way. No doubt 900 million people are very happy right now. I, on the other hand, am trying to position as many fans on me as possible (current air throughput is approximately 300CFM), and the cricket is rapidly becoming a concern secondary… Read more →

  • Meal Attempt

Another cooking experiment goes horribly wrong, or perhaps it’s simply the gritty texture of wheat-free pasta. Actually, the meal turns out to be quite edible (tasty, even), though this whole ‘cooking’ thing still strikes me as horribly inefficient compared to the wonders of takeaway food. Read more →

  • Glistening Stems

Rain at last. A perfect day for watching the cricket and playing backgammon without any excuse to leave the house nor any need for cooling fans. Read more →

  • Myocum Road

Unlike this quiet vista overlooking a valley mid-way between the coast and Mullumbimby, Byron Bay is not a very nice place at the moment. Its under-performing sewage system and over-performing tourist economy mean I try to avoid it as much as possible. This road is the quickest, most scenic way to get there when I… Read more →

  • Aboriginal Art

Kieran and I survey an Aboriginal art exhibition at Woodford, before watching the festival grounds being rapidly dismantled, packing up the campsite, and driving back to Mullumbimby. Two things at least have emerged from the Woodford experience: 1) Sultan’s Kitchen makes an excellent lamb curry, and 2) if you happen to order fruit pancakes from… Read more →

  • Dul-Tson-Kyil-Khor

While everyone else recovers from their hangovers, a Buddhist monk slowly adds to a growing sand mandala (dul-tson-kyil-khor). Over a period of 6 days, four monks will create the mandala from dyed marble grains, then sweep it away. Happy New Year, and all that jazz. Speaking of which, there’s a good fusion group performing right… Read more →

  • New Year’s Eve Concert

I quietly observe the New Year’s Eve rock concert from a distance safe for my ears and prevailing (aesthetic) nausea. Plenty of flashing colours, but sadly lacking in musical content. I saw several more talented groups earlier in the day, however. Beginning to tire of camping. Read more →

  • Woodford Folk Festival

Having postponed my travel to the Woodford Folk Festival by two days owing to sickness, I finally arrive. Though initially striking me more as a food festival than a musical one, there’s plenty to do, eat, and listen to here. There’s even Internet access and mobile phone reception! This evening, I attended a sunset concert… Read more →
